Narrative

Virkegrave is Emma's thesis which she graduated top of her class with highest honors. Virkegrave is an exploration of all disciplines in art. Based on the compositional element of parallel narratives, Virkegrave explores hidden narratives told by visual elements. In this picture the viewer can observe the Nordic tradition of Virkegrave, or sea burial by fire. In the Nordic canon it is important to note that a warrior has to be buried with their entire armour in order to ascend into Valhalla. These four women felt compelled to bury the warrior without their armour. Emma wanted people to come up with their own narrative about the events of these paintings and challenge the viewer in subversions of power and who needs protecting from whom.
