Narrative
Emma approached this painting as a technical exercise in order to keep developing her craft. One of the first things to note is the lack of black — puzzling, since it reads as a black and white portrait. The effect was achieved by blending complementary colours into beautiful greys; understanding the technology of oil is essential to perform those blends. A mix of ultramarine blue (deep), burnt sienna and titanium white was used to reach that noir film feeling on canvas. Because of the nature of those greys, the painting emits a pleasant glow that calms the eye. The swallow was inserted as a technical challenge, a way for Emma to find her limits and see where she needs to practise further.
